Matrix Definition- A matrix is an array of real numbers (or other suitable entities), arranged in rows and columns.
Types of matrices
- Rectangular matrix- Any m×n matrix, where m≠n, is called a rectangular matrix.
- Row matrix - A matrix having only one row is called a row matrix.
- Column matrix- A matrix which has only one column is called a column matrix.
- Square matrix- A matrix in which the number of rows is equal to the number of columns is called a square matrix.
- Diagonal matrix- It is a square matrix all of whose elements except those in the leading diagonal, are zero.
- Scalar matrix - A square matrix in which the diagonal elements are all equal, all other elements being zeros, is called a scalar matrix.
- Unit matrix or Identity matrix- A square matrix in which each diagonal element is unity, all other elements being zeros, is called a unit matrix or an identity matrix.
- Sub-matrix :- A matrix obtained by deleting the rows or columns or both of a matrix is called sub-matrix.
- Comparable matrices - Two matrices A and B are said to be comparable if they are of the same order, they have the same number of rows and the same number of columns.
